NICK GREENS

GROW TEAM

FOUNDER & MASTER GROWER

Nick Greens

Nick Greens started his growing career in 2002 as an apprentice grower for a hydroponics shop.  Nick worked through several cycles/harvests in San Diego before venturing out on his own.  In 2007, Nick moved to Humboldt County, California to work as an assistant grower for a collective of green houses.  During his time in Northern California, Nick began experimenting with a vortex brewer to develop several recipes for compost teas.

In 2010, Nick moved back to Chicago to start growing produce for Blue Star Produce where he perfected his compost tea recipes and became a pioneer in organic micro greens production working for and advising many Chicago vertical farms including Sky Greens, Plant Chicago, Farmbox, and Nick Greens.

In 2014, Nick created the micro greens program at FarmedHere, building its first NFT systems, creating crop and lighting recipes, and helping improve monthly sales by nearly 20%.   In 2016, Nick created a similar Micro greens program for Falling Waters Farms in Indianapolis, increasing its sales by nearly 50%.

Nick is passionate about educating a new generation of controlled environment farmers and has created many internship opportunities for at risk youth in urban Chicago.  In 2016, Nick helped design and build the Food Science Lab at Schurz High School in Chicago, based on a STEM curriculum, that trains future farmers and supplies healthy food for the school cafeteria.  Nick has personally mentored dozens of interns, and many remain working in the industry today.

PRESIDENT

Steve Denenberg

Steve Denenberg serves as President of Nick Greens, bringing his experience in top management positions for one of the nation’s leading indoor agricultural enterprises.

One of the co-founders of farmedHere -- the first USDA organically certified indoor farm in the U.S---Steve served as the COO and CFO of one the largest operating indoor farms in the world. Over the past seven years, Steve created many best practices related to indoor farming operations, organic hydroponics, farm safety, food safety, and irrigation design.  As Farmed Here’s COO, he supervised 30 team members and managed all aspects of the farm including: agriculture, crop planning, plant health, logistics, post-harvest handling and distribution, data analysis, lighting, environmental controls, accounting, and financial planning.

As CFO, Steve helped raise over $8 million between 2012 and 2014 to finance growth, build new grow systems, and later in 2015, helped raise $5 million to hire a new CEO and develop a line of value added products made with crops grown at farmedHere.  While farmedHere ceased operations in January 2017, its affiliated company -- Here.Co -- continues to make value-added products with produce grown from farms around Chicagoland.

Prior to becoming an urban farmer Steve ran the Chicago office for Weyerhaeuser Realty Investors - a $2billion equity fund focused on residential housing and land development.  Steve earned an MBA from Duke University in 2001 and a B.S in Advertising from University of Colorado in 1992.
